Our Story

The Otto Way Recreation Software Reimagined

We experienced the frustration of outdated legacy systems firsthand, so we decided to build the mobile-first platform our industry deserves.

Who founded OttoApp?

OttoApp was founded by Landon Schenck, the original lead architect and founder of REC1 (now CivicRec). After serving as General Manager at CivicPlus following their acquisition of REC1, he launched OttoApp to provide a modern, single-platform alternative for community organizations.

Recreation Changed. Software Didn't.

Recreation departments have evolved, but their software hasn't. Legacy systems grew the way most enterprise software grows: by bolting on new modules or stitching together acquisitions. The result? Staff are forced to use disjointed systems, juggling different logins and rules just to get through the day, while residents struggle with confusing registration portals.

That is why Otto Solutions exists: to give departments one true system—built from the ground up, not patched together from parts.

Built From Decades of Experience

Landon Schenck, CEO and Architect of OttoApp

Landon Schenck, OttoApp's CEO & Architect, knows this problem from the inside. In 2003, he founded REC1, which grew into an industry leader before its acquisition by CivicPlus in 2017 (now operating as CivicRec).

Watching the industry age from the inside taught Landon a critical lesson: another module wasn't going to fix things. The underlying architecture of legacy platforms was fundamentally broken. There is no shortcut to a real, single-UI architecture.

"OttoApp was built as one system from the ground up — a single interface used the same way by staff and the people they serve."

A True Single-Platform Solution

Leveraging his background in Management Information Systems, Landon started over. OttoApp isn't a patched-together suite of tools. It is a single, unified platform built natively for the mobile devices your team and community actually use.

Easier registration means higher participation. A genuinely simple interface means new staff need days of training, not weeks. We are building the future of recreation management—not by bolting on old parts, but by starting fresh with the communities we serve.
